Journey to Awareness Lent Day 24

NIV John 10:30  “I and the Father are one.”

To be one with God.  What an overwhelming thought.  Yet we are told: (Philippians 2:5-6)  “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:  Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped. ”  If Jesus says that He and the Father are one, is this not declaring He was equal with God?

No, not equal but actual.  Jesus did not need to be equal to God, He was God and God was Jesus.  God is also the Father and the Father is God.  The Holy Spirit is God and God is the Holy Spirit.  This is a mystery.  This is the truth.  This is essential doctrine.

The Three that are One is called the Trinity.   It is in the name of the Trinity that we are baptized.  Not putting one person of the divine Three in One over the other.  The Trinity is a perfect harmony of relationships.  There is no dispute or conflict.  There is the completeness of relationship.  We cannot even come close to grasping the perfect pleasure, peace, and purpose in the One.

We can, however, become part of that perfection.  We can desire to be one.  Not wanting to be gods, but growing in our desire to know God, love God, and join with God.

NIV 1 Corinthians 6:17  But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit. This is what can be now.  But just wait for what is to come: (Romans 6:5)  If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.   United with Him.

We and Jesus are and will be One.  In Lent we seek the one-ness with prayer, discipline  dedication, and desire.  We are journeying toward a destination.  God wants us to be One-not seeking to be equal with God but with God and God with us.

NIV John 10:30  “I and the Father are one.”

  1. Beautiful David.

This truth has the Oneness Pentecostals so tied up. As a result they never go beyond their oneness ‘philosophy'( and their desire to argumentatively justify it) to see the full truth within the Word.

Because of the quickening of the Holy Spirit of passages such as these, we are all oneness. Praise the Lord. However, due to the error of some bodies, we must be careful of how we phrase it.
